Caring for Custom Closet Cabinetry: Cleaning, Maintenance and Seasonal Tips

Simple routines that keep custom closets looking new: cleaning, humidity, hardware and seasonal checks.

Clean by material

Wipe melamine and thermofoil with a damp soft cloth. Treat veneer and wood with a mild cleaner and soft cloth. Dry any wet surface right away.

Always test a cleaner on a hidden spot first. Avoid abrasive pads, which scratch finishes, and strong solvents, which can dull or lift edges.

Manage humidity

Tennessee summers are humid. Keep the closet ventilated and consider a dehumidifier in damp rooms.

If you notice a musty smell, check for damp walls or a leaking pipe nearby. Good airflow and a small moisture absorber can help while you fix the cause.

Check hardware

Once a year, check screws, slides and rods and tighten what is loose.

Tighten the screws on pulls and the mounting screws on rods as needed. Wipe the drawer slides and add a drop of light lubricant if the manufacturer recommends it.

Protect from light and heat

Keep fabrics and wood away from direct sun and heat sources.

Sunlight fades fabrics and wood over time. If your closet has a window, use a shade or UV-filtering film, and avoid placing delicate leather and silk in direct light.

Rotate seasonally

Swap seasonal items twice a year and use it as a time to dust and edit.

Dust the top of the cabinets and the upper shelves during each seasonal change. It keeps the closet fresh and prevents dust from drifting onto clothes.

Our advice in one sentence

A damp cloth, a little airflow and an annual check keep a closet looking new.
